Are star map posters astronomically accurate?
Yes. Every star map poster is calculated from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos catalog, a dataset of over 118,000 stars measured by ESA's astrometry satellite. When you enter a date, time, and location, we work out exactly which stars were above the horizon from that spot on Earth and plot them as they appeared, from the horizon at the edge of the circle to the point directly overhead at the center. Each poster shows the stars, the constellation lines, and the Moon. Planets are not shown, and constellation names are left off the design, but every order includes a Constellation Legend eBook that labels and explains the constellations on your map. You can verify your poster independently by entering the same details into the Sky & Telescope interactive sky chart or the free Stellarium software.
