How to Choose a Custom Star Map Company in 2026

What should you compare first?

1. Star data source: a named star catalog, such as Hipparcos or the Yale Bright Star Catalog.
2. Print materials: a stated paper weight and ink type, and any archival or color guarantee.
3. Formats beyond a poster: canvas, foil, a digital file or jewelry.
4. Verification: a map you can check against a free astronomy tool.
5. Track record: review count, and which platform the reviews are on.

How can you check a star map is accurate?

Use a free astronomy tool. It takes about five minutes.

1. Write down the moment. Note the place, date and local time exactly as they will appear on the map. If the service picks a default time, find out what it is. The Night Sky uses 10pm local time.
2. Open a reference tool. Use the Sky & Telescope Interactive Sky Chart or the free Stellarium app (both linked under Sources).
3. Enter the same details. Set the location, date and time. In Stellarium, check the time zone and daylight saving setting for the location.
4. Match the view. Star maps show the whole sky from horizon to horizon, with the point straight overhead at the center. In Stellarium, look straight up and switch to a stereographic or fish-eye projection. The Sky & Telescope chart shows the whole sky by default.
5. Check the orientation. Seen from below, the sky has North at the top, East on the left and West on the right. If your map shows East on the right, it has been mirrored. The science behind our maps explains why.
6. Compare landmarks. Find two or three bright constellations or stars, one near the center and one near the edge. They should sit in the same places.
7. Check the Moon, if shown. Its phase and rough position should match the reference tool.
8. Test the editor. Move the time about 12 hours. The visible sky should change a lot.

How do six star map services compare?

What should you ask before you buy?

1. Which star catalog does the company name, and does it explain how date, time and place change the map?
2. What time does the map show if you do not enter one, and does it adjust for time zone and daylight saving?
3. Can you see a full preview before you pay, and can you check that preview against Stellarium or Sky & Telescope?
4. Are East and West drawn as seen looking up (East on the left), or mirrored like a land map?
5. What does the map show: stars only, constellation lines, constellation names, the Moon, planets? Is anything extra, such as a key to the constellations, included?
6. What paper weight and ink are used, and is there a stated archival or color guarantee?
7. Is the price for a digital file, an unframed print, a framed print or jewelry? What is the total after shipping and tax to your country?
8. What does the return policy cover: only damage and printing errors, or also orders you are unhappy with?
9. How many reviews does the company have, on which platform, and how recent are they?
